Live Music: Pretty Cheeky
Pretty cheeky is a four piece indie alternative rock band from Isla Vista, California. Frontman lead singer and rhythm guitarist Mikey Fogarty formed the band in 2018, and they got their start playing DIY Isla Vista house shows. During this time Pretty Cheeky released two singles: “In the Sun,” featuring bright guitar tones and yearning synths, and “Time to Breathe (Funky Charm),” driven by a groovy bass line, spacey echoes, and punchy vocals. After a brief hiatus in 2022, Fogarty assembled an all new lineup including lead guitarist Siena Waldman, bassist Lance Panariello, and dummer Dmitriy Prokopovich.
Washington DC native Siena Waldman met Fogarty through social media and the two began practicing in Fogarty’s garage on Del Playa Drive. Dmitriy Prokopovich, a UCSB chemistry grad student from New Jersey, then joined the pair at Lot 22, UCSB’s infamous rehearsal spot. Finally, Lance Panariello, former guitarist of Isla Vista surf rock band Happy Medium, joined the group at bass guitar. The quartet played their first show together in an IV backyard in September 2022, covering various styles from the bold brit-rock sound of Arctic Monkeys, the breezy storytelling of Peach Pit, and the chorus and reverb of Mac Demarco, to the dreamy melancholy indie pop of Phoebe Bridgers and Beach Bunny. Pretty Cheeky has continued to frequent the patios, yards, and parks of IV, and the bars of downtown Santa Barbara for sunset vibes and late night raging.
Pretty Cheeky’s upcoming project is a three song EP highlighting intimate vocals with themes of love, loss, and longing, radiant guitars tinged with with nostalgia, bright cymbals and snare accents, with some house beat influences.
